Guilford
to Become Lilac Capital of Maine
As part of an ongoing beautification
project the Guilford Economic Development Board is organizing a community
wide lilac tree planting. This beautification project ties in with
the downtown improvements completed last summer and is designed to make
Guilford a desirable place to do business. Another step in bringing
people to town is to define for them who Guilford is…we are the lilac
capital of Maine. All of this is part of a larger plan to market
Guilford to the outside world and let them know who we are and why they
should be here.
So honor a loved one; celebrate an
anniversary, a birthday, a valentine, Mother’s Day or other holiday, the
birth of a child, or any noteworthy occasion. Create a living
memorial on behalf of a loved one. Tribute Trees donated to
Guilford will be planted in various prominent locations such as the boat
launch by the ball fields, boat launch by River Bend Homes, Don Osborne Memorial
Playground, athletic complex on Water Street, near the PCHS school sign
on Water Street, Cummings Park (near the gazebo), War Memorial, library,
Melvin Park, cemeteries, and schools, as well as others.
The
town of Guilford and the Guilford Economic Development Board will handle
all of the tree arrangements. Just stop at the Guilford town office
or library to place an order. Each Tribute Tree costs $25.00
and all trees will be planted in the spring. We will notify you or
the person being honored of the location of the tree after planting is
complete, with a memorable certificate. The trees are supplied by
local nursery, Snow Brook Gardens.
If you prefer a lilac tree for
your own yard, we will have a limited supply available for
purchase. There will be many different sizes ranging from short
(5-6’) to very tall (20’). We will also offer a full range of
colors from creamy whites to blues and from the traditional lilac colors
to the rare harder to find deep purples, pinks and magentas. Funds
raised from purchases will help buy trees for Guilford and to cover the
cost of maintenance. Each tree costs $25 or you may purchase 3 for
$70.00 but be sure to pre-order through February 20th to make
sure you get the variety you’re looking for.
